The Bateleur eagle (Terathopius ecaudatus) is a striking bird of prey native to Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, known for its distinctive black plumage, bright red face, and short tail, which gives it a unique, buoyant flight. Its name, derived from the French word for "acrobat," reflects its impressive aerial agility. The Bateleur primarily inhabits savannas and open woodlands, where it hunts a variety of prey, including small mammals, birds, reptiles, and carrion. It is a monogamous species, with pairs often remaining together for life. Due to habitat loss, poisoning, and hunting, its population has declined, leading to its classification as endangered by conservation organizations. The Bateleur eagle plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling prey populations and scavenging carrion.
