Description

The coin commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, paying tribute to the extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and resilience of those who fought to defend their homeland during one of history’s most brutal conflicts.

The Great Patriotic War—the Eastern Front of World War II—was waged between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945. It began with Germany’s invasion of Soviet territory under Operation Barbarossa and evolved into a grueling and catastrophic war marked by immense human suffering. Soviet cities such as Leningrad, Stalingrad, and Moscow became epicenters of fierce resistance. The war resulted in the deaths of more than 20 million Soviet citizens, both soldiers and civilians, and left entire regions devastated.

Despite the staggering losses, the Soviet people turned the tide of the war, achieving critical victories at battles like Stalingrad and Kursk, eventually advancing into Berlin and securing Germany's surrender in May 1945. The 80th anniversary serves as a solemn reminder of the cost of peace and the heroism that defined the Soviet war effort, commemorated annually on May 9th, Victory Day.

Obverse

Depicts the denomination in the centre, with a hidden design detail: the number ‘50’ contains the abbreviation RUB embedded within the ‘0’, which becomes visible when viewed from different angles. The MMD mint mark appears just below the denomination. Around the outer ring, the inscription ‘BANK OF RUSSIA’ is placed at the top, while the year of issue is shown at the bottom. Stylized laurel and oak branches decorate the sides, with some elements subtly extending into the central disc.

Reverse

Depicts the official logo marking the 80th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 at the center, framed by a raised laurel wreath around the outer ring.

The logo features a stylized number 80, with the word ‘VICTORY’ below, and a depiction of the iconic Motherland Calls monument. Together, these elements form a powerful visual tribute to the memory of World War II, symbolizing strength, sacrifice, and national pride.

The Motherland Calls (Russian: Родина-мать зовёт!) is a colossal statue located in Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad), Russia, commemorating the Battle of Stalingrad. Designed by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich and engineer Nikolai Nikitin, the statue was unveiled in 1967 as part of the Mamayev Kurgan memorial complex. Standing at 85 meters (279 feet) from the tip of the sword to the base, it was the tallest statue in the world at the time of its completion. The monument depicts a woman stepping forward with a raised sword, symbolizing the Motherland calling her sons and daughters to defend their homeland. It remains one of the most iconic symbols of Russian wartime resilience and national pride.
