Description

Hungary's regional bar associations have a rich historical legacy, tracing back to the passage of Act XXXIV of 1874, which laid the foundation for the modern legal profession in the country. Officially enacted in January 1875, this law led to the creation of territorially organized, self-governing chambers of lawyers with mandatory membership, ensuring both professional independence and the representation of legal interests. These regional bar associations played a vital role in upholding the integrity of the legal system, supporting constitutional institutions, and adapting through times of political and social change. Today, 20 regional bar associations operate across Hungary—one in each county and one in Budapest—continuing their mission to serve both legal professionals and the public seeking justice.

Obverse

Depicts, in the central field, framed by a beaded edge and intersected in the upper left by a detail of a dry seal, the inscription “150 YEARS” appears vertically rotated to the left. The digits “5” and “0” are creatively merged to form a stylized section sign. Encircling the design, the inscription reads “BAR ASSOCIATIONS” at the top and “IN THE SERVICE OF JUSTICE SEEKERS” at the bottom. The engraver’s privy mark is placed on the right side.

The design is inspired by a stained glass window from the headquarters of the Budapest Bar Association. At its center stands a prominent paragraph symbol, framed by two concentric pearl-like borders. Surrounding this are twenty square elements, each featuring a paragraph symbol, symbolizing Hungary’s regional bar associations. Outside the outer border, the names of these regional centers are inscribed in alphabetical order. The edge of the coin bears the inscription “HUNGARY” at the top, the denomination and the word “FORINT” at the bottom, the year “2025” on the left, and the mint mark “BP.” on the right. The engraver’s privy mark appears just below the design on the right side.
