Description

The European Capital of Culture is a title awarded annually by the European Union to one or more cities to highlight their cultural life and development. The program, established in 1985, aims to celebrate the diversity of European cultures, foster a sense of shared identity, and boost tourism and local economies. Cities chosen as European Capitals of Culture organize a year-long series of cultural events that showcase their heritage, creativity, and innovation.

Trenčín is a historic city in western Slovakia, known for its medieval castle towering above the Váh River and its well-preserved old town. With roots dating back to Roman times, Trenčín has long been a cultural and strategic center. Today, it blends rich history with vibrant modern life, featuring festivals, museums, and lively public spaces. In 2026, Trenčín was one of the European Capitals of Culture, highlighting its dynamic cultural scene and commitment to connecting history with contemporary creativity.

Obverse

Depicts the silhouette of a medieval castle with its distinctive tower and historic architectural elements. In the lower section, symbols of the arts — a painter’s palette with a brush, a film camera, and a theater mask — are integrated. The inscription “TRENČÍN” appears within the castle silhouette on the right, with the year of issue positioned above. Around the edge, the issuing country is indicated at the top, while “European Capital of Culture” is inscribed along the bottom. The outer ring is adorned with twelve stars symbolizing the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
