Obverse

Depicts the George Cross surrounded by the country name between two dolphins above, and the issue date also between two dolphins from the coat of arms of Malta below.

The George Cross is a prestigious British medal awarded for exceptional heroism or courage in extreme circumstances. Instituted by King George VI in 1940, it is the highest civilian award for gallantry and can also be awarded to military personnel for acts not in the presence of the enemy. In a unique and historic gesture, King George VI awarded the George Cross to the entire population of Malta on 15 April 1942, acknowledging their extraordinary bravery and endurance during the intense Axis bombing campaign in World War II. The decoration is a silver cross bearing the inscription "FOR GALLANTRY" at its center, surrounded by the royal monogram GVI (George VI) in each of the four angles of the cross. This symbol of courage and resilience is still deeply woven into Malta’s national identity and is prominently displayed on the Maltese flag.
