Description

World Food Day, observed globally on October 16, marks the establishment of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. It is recognized by various organizations dedicated to addressing hunger and food security, such as the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. The World Food Programme was awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize for its endeavors in fighting hunger, promoting peace in conflict zones, and combatting the weaponization of hunger during warfare.

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms between 1975 and 1988, the new name of the Republic of Malta.

The coat of arms was adopted on 11 July 1975, seven months after Malta became a republic. It showed a coastal scene with the rising sun, a traditional Maltese boat (Luzzu), a shovel and a pitchfork, and an Opuntia. The emblem was controversial since it was not heraldic, and it was replaced by the current coat of arms soon after the Nationalists won the 1987 election. It was proposed that the 1964 coat of arms be readopted, but eventually a simplified version of it was chosen.

The circular FAO emblem appears prominently, featuring a stylized wheat ear at its lower part, flanked by the date “OCT. 16.” marking World Food Day. An inscription of the event is displayed at the top, while the denomination, accompanied by the pound symbol, is positioned at the bottom.
