The bearded vulture, also known as the lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus), is one of the rarest and most majestic birds of prey in Europe, known for its striking appearance and unique habit of feeding primarily on bone marrow. In Andorra, located in the Pyrenees, the bearded vulture holds special ecological and symbolic significance. The rugged, mountainous terrain of Andorra provides an ideal habitat for this endangered species, and conservation efforts in the region have contributed to its gradual recovery in the Pyrenean range. By dedicating one of its 2025 commemorative €2 coins to the bearded vulture, Andorra not only highlights its commitment to preserving biodiversity but also raises awareness of the fragile balance between human activity and wildlife conservation in high-altitude ecosystems.
