The Union Buildings in Pretoria, South Africa, are a monumental symbol of the country's government and democratic history. Designed by architect Sir Herbert Baker and completed in 1913, the sandstone complex crowns Meintjieskop and houses the official seat of the South African government and the offices of the President. With its grand semi-circular design, Italianate style, and beautifully terraced gardens, the site has become an iconic backdrop for national events and political milestones, including the inauguration of Nelson Mandela in 1994. The Union Buildings stand as both a functional center of power and a poignant symbol of South Africa’s journey from colonialism and apartheid to democracy.
