Portrait of Juan Pablo Duarte (1813-1876), the inscription "Father of the Fatherland" above, date below.
Inscription "DUARTE" either on the neck or on the side in mintages.

Juan Pablo Duarte Díez (January 26, 1813 – July 15, 1876) is one of the founding fathers of the Dominican Republic. He was a visionary and liberal thinker, who along with Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella, is widely considered to be the architect of the Dominican Republic and its independence from Haitian rule in 1844. He would help create the political organization La Trinitaria to fight against the Haitian occupation, achieve independence, and create a self-sufficient nation.

Reverse

Denomination and the national coat of arms.

The coat of arms of the Dominican Republic features a shield, supported by a bay laurel branch (left) and a palm frond (right); above the shield, a ribbon displays the national motto: Dios, Patria, Libertad (God, Homeland, Liberty). Below the shield, the words República Dominicana appear on a ribbon. In the center of the shield, flanked by six spears (three on each side), the front four holding the national flag, is a Catholic Bible with a small cross above it.

The constitution dictates that the Bible be opened to the book of the New Testament, John 8:32, which reads "conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres", literal translation: "know the truth and the truth will set you free".
