Description

The Russian Geographical Society is a learned society based in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It promotes exploration and geography with research programs in fields including oceanography and ethnography. The society was founded on 6 (18) August 1845 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Prior to the Russian Revolution of 1917, it was known as the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.

Obverse

Depicts in the centre the emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two-headed eagle with wings down designed by I. Bilibin), under it – the semicircular inscription BANK OF RUSSIA framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim – on top: THREE RUBLES, below: to the left – indications of the precious metal and its fineness, in the centre – the year of issue, to the right – the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

Reverse

Depicts the relief profile portrait of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich, to the left of it below the inscription in three lines: GRAND DUKE KONSTANTIN NIKOLAYEVICH, above the inscription along the rim: RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY FOUND in 1845.

Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich of Russia (1827–1892, Russian Geographic Society's official president in 1845-92) was the second son of Tsar Nicholas I. During the reign of his brother Alexander II, Konstantin was an admiral of the Russian fleet and reformed the Russian Navy. He was instrumental in persuading his brother to sell Alaska to the United States in 1867.
