Description

Commemorative coins have been an Olympic tradition since the ancient Games, formally organized as collectors’ items starting with the Helsinki 1952 Games. The Rio 2016 Games marked the first time Brazil issued a commemorative coin collection for the Olympics.

To celebrate the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Brazilian Central Bank created 36 commemorative coins. This collection includes sixteen R$1 coins for regular circulation, along with four gold and sixteen silver coins.

Sailing has played a crucial role in civilization by providing greater mobility for trade, transport, warfare, and fishing. As a sport, sailing (previously known as yachting) has been part of the Olympic Games since their inception in 1896, though the initial races were canceled due to severe weather. Except for the 1904 Games, sailing has been featured in every Olympics.

Olympic sailing has seen various classes of boats, initially categorized by weight and later by size or name. The Vintage Yachting Games, introduced in 2008, celebrate discontinued classes. Until 1988, sailing was gender-independent, with women participating as early as 1900. The first exclusive women's event was added in 1988. Olympic sailing typically follows a fleet race format, though match races have also been included. Great Britain leads in Olympic sailing medals.
