An icebreaker is a special-purpose ship or boat designed to move and navigate through ice-covered waters, and provide safe waterways for other boats and ships.

Built in 1975, Urho is the oldest icebreaker in the world. In a name-giving ceremony held on March 5, 1975, the President of Finland, Urho Kekkonen, named the largest and most powerful icebreaker built to that date ‘Urho’, his namesake. With a combination of power and excellent manoeuvrability, Urho is able to provide reliable icebreaking performance in the worst pack ice. Since Urho was commissioned, all 23 winter ports on the Finnish coast have remained open for year-round navigation.
