Description

The Ten-Day War or the Slovenian Independence War was a civil war in Yugoslavia that followed the Slovenian declaration of independence on 25 June 1991. It was fought between the Slovenian Territorial Defence and the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) in 1991, after Slovenia declared its independence. It lasted from 27 June 1991 until 7 July 1991, when the Brijuni Accords were signed. It marked the beginning of the Yugoslav Wars. For Slovenia, the war marked the decisive defence of its independence in regard to Yugoslavia. It was officially recognised by all European Community member states on 15 January 1992 and joined the United Nations on 22 May.

Obverse

Over the left part of the inner circle is obliquely positioned a line. At its right, in the upper part of the coin is the inscription "25 years" and below it the inscription "Republic of Slovenia". Underneath these inscriptions is the original France Prešeren’s written record of the part of the national anthem of Slovenia "Ki hrepene dočakat' dan = Who long and work for that bright day). At the bottom of the inner circle is the year "2016". The coin’s outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.

The national anthem of Slovenia is based on "Zdravljica", a carmen figuratum poem by the 19th-century Romantic Slovene poet France Prešeren, inspired by the ideals of Liberté, égalité, fraternité, and set to music by Stanko Premrl. As the country's national anthem, it is one of the state symbols of Slovenia.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
