Description

The second commemorative 2 Euro coin issued by the Vatican in 2016 is dedicated to the Jubilee or Holy Year of Mercy.

The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy (Latin: Iubilaeum Extraordinarium Misericordiae) was a Roman Catholic period of prayer held from 8 December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, to 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Like previous jubilees, it was seen by the Church as a period for remission of sins and universal pardon focusing particularly on God's forgiveness and mercy. It was an extraordinary Jubilee because it had not been predetermined long before; ordinary jubilees are usually celebrated every 25 years. The 2016 Jubilee was first announced by Pope Francis on 13 March 2015.

Obverse

Saint Martin of Tours sharing his cloak with a poor man. The design is surrounded by the inscriptions 'JUBILEE OF MERCY' at the left and 'VATICAN CITY' at the right, both in a semi-circle. At the right, there is as well the year of issuance '2016' and at the bottom the mint mark 'R' and the name of the artist. The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

St. Martin of Tours (316 or 336 – 397) was Bishop of Tours, whose shrine in France became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. He has become one of the most familiar and recognizable Christian saints. He is best known for the account of his using his military sword to cut his cloak in two, to give half to a beggar clad only in rags in the depth of winter.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
