Description

Georg Henrik von Wright (1916–2003) was a Finnish philosopher, who succeeded Ludwig Wittgenstein as a professor at the University of Cambridge. He published in English, Finnish, German, and Swedish, having belonged to the Swedish-speaking minority of Finland. Von Wright was of both Finnish and 17th-century Scottish ancestry.

Considered the most influential Finnish philosopher of the 20th century, von Wright also expressed his opinions on many phenomena of his times and was a familiar figure on television, in the press and on marches for peace. The year 2016 marks the centennial of von Wright's birth, and Finland pays tribute to this great thinker with a commemorative coin.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
