Description

In 2018 Latvia commemorates the centennial of its independence and issues a series of four commemorative 2 Euro coins dedicated to the historic regions that make up the country.

The first coins of the series dedicated to the Vidzeme region (Livonian: Vidumō), one of the historical and cultural regions of Latvia. Literally meaning "the Middle Land" it is situated in north-central Latvia north of the Daugava River. Sometimes in German it is also known as Livland- German form from Latin Livonia, though it comprises only a small part of Medieval Livonia and about half (Latvian part) of Swedish Livonia.

The coat of arms of the region Vidzeme: a silver griffin on a red background with a sword in its right paw, currently without a gold crown, incorporated in the coat of arms of the Duchy of Pārdaugava.

Images of coats of arms of Latvia's cultural and historical regions have not been used in coin design so far.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
