Description

Aragatsotn is a province (marz) of Armenia. It is in the west of the country, and its capital is Ashtarak. The name means "a foot of Aragats" (the highest mountain of the Republic of Armenia). The province is primarily inhabited by Armenians but also holds a significant Yazidi Kurdish minority.

Obverse

Byurakan Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the Armenian Academy of Sciences. Byurakan Observatory's main telescope is a 2.6 m cassegrain reflector, along with a 1 and .5 m Schmidt camera as well as other smaller telescopes.
