Depicts the red ribbon, symbolising the fight against AIDS. The other two ribbons with an inscription 'World AIDS Day' inverted and associated with two Vs to strengthen the symbolism of the much-hoped-for victory over the disease. The date 1st of December, Unesco World AIDS Day, appears at the top of the central field. Country abbreviation and issue date in the centre below. Mintmark on the left, mint master's mark on the right. The outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

The Red Ribbon Project was created by the New York-based Visual AIDS Artists (anonymous as individuals) Caucus in 1991. It should be worn close to the heart to symbolise solidarity with AIDS sufferers and is in the shape of an upside-down V. The idea is for it to be worn as a V one day to signify victory over the disease.

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
