Description

Upon Grand Duke Henri's accession to the throne, the new sovereign established his small, medium and great coat of arms, which replaced those used since 1898. The new coat of arms is confined to the essential elements, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Nassau family. Reproducing the details of the national coat of arms of the Grand Duchy, the new coat of arms of Grand Duke Henri reflects the views of a modern Head of State aware of present political realities.

Obverse

Depicts, on the left, a portrait of Grand Duke Henri and on the right, the lesser coat of arms of the Grand Duke, above which the year mark is shown between mint and mint master marks, overlapping slightly into the outer ring. Below, the name of the issuing country Luxembourg. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring.

The Grand Duke has a personal coat of arms, the current arms were adopted in 2001. On his personal Coat of Arms, the Grand Duke quarters Luxembourg arms (a field of 10 stripes alternating white and blue with a crowned, double-tailed red Lion on top) with Nassau (a crowned golden lion on a blue background strewn with gold billets, which are the basis of the coat of arms of the Netherlands).

Mint mark: Caduceus (Mercury's wand, a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings), the logo of the Royal Dutch Mint (Utrecht, the Netherlands)

Mint master mark: Sailboat – Maarten Brouwer

Engraver: Alain Hoffmann

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
