Description

Following the accession to the throne of King Willem-Alexander, a new series of euro coins was issued depicting the effigy of the new Head of State. Willem-Alexander (born 27 April 1967) is the King of the Netherlands. He became Prince of Orange as heir apparent upon his mother's accession on 30 April 1980, and succeeded her following her abdication on 30 April 2013.

It is customary in the Netherlands to alter the direction in which the Monarch is looking whenever a new Monarch mounts the throne - so while Beatrix was looking towards the left, Willem-Alexander is looking towards the right.

At the right of the vertical line, reading from top to bottom, the title "King of the Netherlands" in Dutch. At the bottom left of the effigy the year of issuance.
