Borjgali design divides date within circle. REPUBLIC OF GEORGIA shows in both Roman and Georgian characters.

Borjgali is a Georgian symbol of the Sun with seven rotating wings over the Christian Tree of Life and is related to the Mesopotamian symbols of eternity. It is usually depicted within the circle that symbolizes the Universe. The roots of the Tree go into the "past" and its palm-like branches are for the "future". The Tree itself symbolizes the continuity between past, present and the future. The Borjgali is usually placed above the tree and symbolizes the Sun, eternal movement and life.

Nowadays, the symbol is used in Georgian IDs and passports, as well as on currency.

Saint Mammes riding a lion, a depiction on an 11th century silver plate gilded with gold from the Gelati monastery.

Saint Mammes (Mamas, Mammas, Mammet) of Caesarea is a semi-legendary child-martyr of the 3rd century. He was martyred at Caesarea. Born in prison to parents who had been jailed because they were Christian, Mammes became an orphan when his parents were executed. Mammes was later thrown to the lions, but managed to make the beasts docile. He preached to animals in the fields, and a lion remained with him as companion. Accompanied by the lion, he visited Duke Alexander, who condemned him to death. He was struck in the stomach with a trident. Bleeding, Mammes dragged himself to a spot near a theater before his soul was carried into heaven by angels.

Gelati is a medieval monastic complex near Kutaisi, in the Imereti region of western Georgia. A masterpiece of the Georgian Golden Age, Gelati was founded in 1106 by King David IV of Georgia.
