Obverse

Head of Mercury and a small caduceus divides date at left.

Mercury is a major Roman god. He is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, communication, travelers, luck, trickery and thieves. He is often depicted holding the caduceus in his left hand. The caduceus is a short staff entwined by two serpents, sometimes surmounted by wings. In Greek tradition, Mercury was known as Hermes.

The caduceus is the traditional symbol of Hermes and features two snakes winding around an often winged staff.

Depicts rampant Leo Belgicus with a paw over the stone slab (Constitution of Belgium, LEX is law in Latin), country name in French above, value below.

The Leo Belgicus (Latin for Belgic Lion) was used in both heraldry and map design to symbolize the former Low Countries (current day Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and a small part of northern France) with the shape of a lion. The names derived from the Belgae are now mostly identified with the country Belgium.

The Constitution of Belgium dates back to 1831. Since then Belgium has been a parliamentary monarchy that applies the principles of ministerial responsibility for the government policy and the Trias Politica. The Constitution established Belgium as a centralised unitary state.
