Volleyball landed in Finland in the 1920s, and the Finnish Volleyball Association was founded in 1959.

According to a national exercise survey carried out in 2009–2010, there were approximately 118,000 amateur volleyball players in Finland. Of this number, roughly 27,000 are 3–18 years of age, 83,000 are aged 19–65 and 8,000 are 66–79 years old. There are 11,500 licensed players, of which 6,900 are youth players.

The world's largest youth volleyball tournament, the Power Cup, is held annually in Finland. Finland fields a total of eight national teams: men, women, boys (3) and girls (3).
