Description

The Tynwald, or more formally, the High Court of Tynwald is the legislature of the Isle of Man. Tynwald claims to be over 1,000 years old, and thus the 'oldest continuous parliament' in the world. In 1979, the Manx people celebrated the millennium of their parliament, although there is no evidence that suggests such an assembly was held in 979, or that any such event resembled the modern day court.

The 17th and 18th centuries are represented by a man-of-war and a soldier of the English Civil War period. The ship is based on the "Sovereign of the Seas" built for King Charles I in 1637.

The man-of-war was a British Royal Navy expression for a powerful warship or frigate from the 16th to the 19th century. The term often refers to a ship armed with cannon and propelled primarily by sails, as opposed to a galley which is propelled primarily by oars.

Engraver: Leslie Lindsay.
