Description

The Paris Mint issued 2-euro commemorative collector coins honouring the 25th anniversary of the pink ribbon symbol of the fight against breast cancer. A standard bi-metallic composition and a coloured version with the pink ribbon were released.

The standard coin costs €10 and the coloured one costs €20. With the purchase of every coin, the Paris mint donates €2 to the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc.’s campaign, called “Le Cancer du Seins-Parlons-en!” (or “Breast Cancer, Let’s Talk About It!”). The campaign was started in 1992 by Evelyn Lauder, the daughter-in-law of company founder Estée Lauder. On the board of overseers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, she founded the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center in 1992. That same year, Lauder, along with editor and author Alexandra Penney, launched their first international breast cancer awareness campaign to utilize the pink ribbon as an icon of the effort. “Le Cancer du Seins-Parlons-en!” was one aspect of that work.

Obverse

Depicts a woman holding a pink ribbon over her left breast. Inscriptions around are "25th Anniversary of the Pink Ribbon", the dual date 1992 and 2017, and the abbreviation RF (French Republic). On the outer edge 12 five-pointed stars representing the European Union.

The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons, and the color pink in general, identify the wearer or promoter with the breast cancer brand and express moral support for women with breast cancer.

Charlotte Haley, who had battled breast cancer, introduced the concept of a peach-colored breast cancer awareness ribbon. She attached them to cards saying, “The National Cancer Institute’s annual budget is 1.8 billion US dollars, and only 5 percent goes to cancer prevention. Help us wake up our legislators and America by wearing this ribbon.”

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
