Description

The Kingdom of Romania was a constitutional monarchy which existed between 13 March 1881 and 30 December 1947, specified by the first three Constitutions of Romania (1866, 1923, 1938).

Obverse

The middle coat of arms of the Kingdom of Romania (1922–1947) in centre, lettering across top, date at bottom, three stars either side.

Romania’s coat of arms has as a central element the shield placed on the chest of a crowned Aquila holding an Orthodox cross. Aquila is the genus of true eagles and a symbol of the Latinity of the Romanians. The Aquila was placed on a shield, capped with the Steel Crown.

The shield surmounting the eagle is divided into five fields, one for each historical province of Romania with its traditional symbol:
· golden Aquila - Wallachia
· aurochs - Moldavia and Bukovina
· dolphins - Dobruja
· a black Aquila, seven castles, a sun and a moon - Transylvania, Maramureș and Crișana
· lion and Trajan's bridge - Oltenia and the Banat

The Steel Crown of King Carol I of Romania was forged at the Army Arsenal in Bucharest of the steel of a cannon captured by the Romanian Army from the Ottomans during the War of Independence (1877–1878). Carol I chose steel, and not gold, to symbolize the bravery of the Romanian soldiers. He received it during the ceremonies of his coronation and of the proclamation of Romania as a kingdom in 1881.

Nihil sine Deo, Latin for "Nothing without God", is used as a motto by the German Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen royal family. This formula was the motto of the Kingdom of Romania, while ruled by the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty (1878–1947).
