Description

On 25 March 2007, all 13 euro-area countries issued a single commemorative 2-euro coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, the EU’s founding document. The Treaty established the original European Economic Community among its six signatories; that Community has evolved over the decades into today’s 27-member European Union, of which the euro is perhaps the most tangible symbol.

Obverse

Depicts the Treaty of Rome signed by the six founding member states (Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and West Germany) on a background evoking the paving, designed by Michelangelo, of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome where the Treaty was signed on 25 March 1957.

Two inscriptions ’Europe’ and ’Treaty of Rome 50 years’ above. The year and the national name of the issuing country below.

The outer ring contains the twelve stars of the European Union.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
