Description

The 1982 FIFA World Cup, the 12th FIFA World Cup, was held in Spain from 13 June to 11 July 1982. The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War.

The tournament was won by Italy, after defeating West Germany 3–1 in the final in the Spanish capital of Madrid. It was Italy's third World Cup win and first since 1938. The holders Argentina were eliminated in the second group round. Algeria, Cameroon, Honduras, Kuwait and New Zealand made their first appearances in the finals.

The tournament featured two of the greatest matches in World Cup history: Italy's sensational win over Brazil in a second round game and West Germany's semi-final defeat of France via the first ever penalty shoot-out in World Cup competition.

The Manx triskelion ("three legs of Mann") is the symbol of the Isle of Man's (also known as Mann). A triskelion of three legs conjoined at the thigh, which dates with certainty to the late 13th century, is of uncertain origin. The symbol appears in the island's official flag and official coat of arms, as well as its currency.
