Description

The Kingdom of the Netherlands, commonly known as the Netherlands, is a sovereign state and constitutional monarchy with territory in western Europe and in the Caribbean.

The vast majority in land area of the constituent country of the Netherlands (as well as the Kingdom) is located in Europe, with the exception of the Caribbean Netherlands: its three special municipalities (Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius) are located in the Caribbean. The constituent countries of Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten are located in the Caribbean as well.

This coin is the first colorized coin for the Netherlands. The new coin, produced in three versions, colorized proof, ordinary proof and BU quality, are sold as a three-coin set, the colorized coin is only available in this set. The proof and BU coins are available separately.

Obverse

The inner part of the design shows a continuing orange ribbon that starts from the outside depicting the effigy of King Willem-Alexander and continues to depict the effigies of his six predecessors: Queen Beatrix, Queen Juliana, Queen Wilhelmina, King Willem III, King Willem II and King Willem I.

The effigies are surrounded by the inscription 'Willem-Alexander King of Netherlands' above, the engraver's initials (KRCL), issue year followed by the mint master mark (sailboat, Maarten Brouwer) and the Royal Dutch mintmark (Mercury's wand) below and at the left side of the effigies the inscription '200 Years of Kingdom of Netherlands'.

The coin's outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
