Description

The coin commemorates the 62nd Eurovision Song Contest. It took place at the International Exhibition Centre in Kiev, Ukraine in 2017.

Forty-two countries participated in the contest. The winner was Portugal with the song "Amar pelos dois" (Loving For Both of Us), performed by Salvador Sobral and written by his sister Luísa Sobral. This was Portugal's first win – and first top-five placing – in 53 years of participation, the longest winless run by a country in Eurovision history.

Obverse

In the center against a smooth background is Ukraine's small coat of arms, below which are the legend "Ukraine", the coin's face value, issue year and the mint mark of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU); above is the following semicircular conventionalized composition: Kiev's cityscape with a statue of the patron saint Archangel Michael and the legend "Kiev".

Michael (lit. 'Who is like God?') is an archangel in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In the New Testament Michael leads God's armies against Satan's forces in the Book of Revelation, where during the war in heaven he defeats Satan.

The state coat of arms of Ukraine is the Tryzub (trident). The modern "trident" symbol was adopted as the coat of arms of the Ukrainian People's Republic in February 1918. The design has precedents in seals of the Kiyivan Rus'. The first known archeological and historical evidence of this symbol can be found on the seals of the Rurik dynasty. It was stamped on the gold and silver coins issued by Prince Volodymyr the Great (980–1015).
