Description

Increases in the silver bullion price led to the 500-lira coins being produced only in small numbers for collectors after 1967.

Obverse

Bust of a woman in Renaissance dress with her hair in a cloth and a braided tail, representing Italy, surrounded by 19 shields. From lower left the shields are: Genova, Torino, Aosta, Milano, Trento, Venezia, Trieste, Udine, Bologna, Firenze, Ancona, Perugia, Roma, L'Aquila, Napoli, Bari, Potenza, Catanzaro, Sicilia, Cagliari. The last two are hidden behind the bust.

Reverse

Depicts Christopher Columbus's flagship carrack Santa María and two smaller caravels, the Pinta and the Niña, sailing to the right. Below the value, with mint mark (R) and name of the engraver (within sea waves).

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer and navigator who completed four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, opening the way for the widespread European exploration and colonization of the Americas. His expeditions, sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs of Spain, were the first European contact with the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
