Obverse

Depicts a portrait of Simone Veil in the centre. The background depicts the European Parliament on which her name, indication of the country ‘RF’, year of issuance ‘2018’ and the mintmarks are inscribed. There are also two numbers: 1975 and 78651.

France legalized abortion in Law 75-17 of 18 January 1975 (Veil Law), which permitted a woman to receive an abortion on the request until the tenth week of pregnancy. Simone Veil was a key figure in the legalization of abortion.

78651 is Simone Veil's Auschwitz number. At Auschwitz, prisoners were tattooed with their prisoner number, on the chest for Soviet prisoners of war and on the left arm for civilians.

The 12 stars of the European Union on the ring, which also depicts, within intersecting lines the issue year and three marks:

• Mintmark of the Paris Mint: cornucopia
• Trademark of the mint director Yves Sampo: pentagon with letters AG, MP and YS
• Privy mark of the engraver Joaquin Jimenez: two nested squares superimposed on a rhinoceros head

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
