Description

The British florin, or two shilling coin, was issued from 1849 until 1970.

Edward VII (Albert Edward; 1841–1910) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. The Edwardian era, which covered Edward's reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism.

Engraver: George William de Saulles

Obverse

Bare head of the King Edward VII facing right, surrounded by the inscription. George William de Saulles' initials underneath the king's bust.

The legend is an abbreviated translation of “Edward VII by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India”.

EDWARDVS VII D:G: BRITT:OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP:
DLS.

Reverse

Depicts a windswept figure of Britannia standing on the bow of a ship holding a shield with her left hand and a trident with her right, and inscribed value above with the date below. The sea can be seen behind her.

The modern-day Britannia coinage, bullion pieces struck by the Royal Mint for investors and collectors, has a reverse that strongly resembles that of the Edwardian florin.
