Obverse

Depicts the Castle of Berat surrounded by the inscription "Republic of Albania" on the top and the year of issue at the bottom.

The Castle of Berat, also known as the Kalaja e Beratit, is a historic fortress located in Berat, Albania, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back to the 4th century BCE, it has been continuously inhabited and expanded by Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The castle sits on a steep hill overlooking the Osum River, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape. Inside its walls, there are well-preserved medieval churches, mosques, and traditional Ottoman houses, reflecting Berat’s diverse cultural and religious history. Today, the castle remains a living neighborhood, with people still residing within its ancient walls, making it one of the few continuously inhabited castles in Europe.
