Description

There is a rare 1961 variety (Hern# R5) with full ground cover under the wagon on the reverse. Hern estimates the original mintage to be in the region of 80 but states that only 12 are known.

Obverse

Depicts a portrait of Jan van Riebeeck surrounded by the national motto in Afrikaans and English.

Johan Anthoniszoon "Jan" van Riebeeck (1619–1677) was a Dutch navigator and colonial administrator who founded Cape Town in what then became the Dutch Cape Colony of the Dutch East India Company.
