Description

In 1992, the beautiful city of Barcelona plays host to the Olympic Games. To commemorate this great sporting occasion and the participation of the Estonian team in the Summer Olympic Games after more than fifty years, the Bank of Estonia has authorised the Royal Mint to issue a limited quantity of silver Proof 10-kroon coins.

Obverse

The reverse bears the official Coat of Arms of the Republic of Estonia. The inscription translates as Republic of Estonia and includes the date 1992.

After the restorationof independence in August 1991, the three lions of the coat of arms of the Government of Estonia were placed on the coins of the Republic. The lions are passant guardant again like in the coat of arms of Duke Otto (the second son of Christoffer II, Prince of Denmark, Duke of Estonia and Laaland), but not crowned.

In fact it is this coat of arms that came to be the coat of arms of Estonia because it appears on the seal of the city of Reval (Tallinn) used from 1340 until 1390. On this seal the coat of arms is supported by duke Otto himself.

One of the lions symbolizes the courage of the fight for freedom in ancient times. The second stands for the courage in the uprisings in Harjumaa in 1343. The third represents the courage of the Estonian fight for freedom between 1918-1920.

Reverse

The obverse of this coin depicts the Olympic sport of yachting with the inscription XXV OLÜMPIAAD to the right and the denominational value 10 KROONI below. Also incorporated into the design is a sixteen pointed star, part of the symbol of the National Olympic Committee.

Sailing/Yachting is an Olympic sport starting from the Games of the 1st Olympiad (1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece). With the exception of 1904 and possible 1916 sailing was always a part of the Olympic program. The Sailing program of 1992 consisted of a total of ten sailing classes. For each class races were scheduled from July 27, 1992 to August 4, 1992 of the coast of Barcelona, Spain on the Mediterranean Sea.
