Description

The Sultanate of Zanzibar (1856–1964) comprised the territories at one point included all of what is now Kenya as well as the Zanzibar Archipelago of the Swahili Coast.

Sayyid Barghash bin Said Al-Busaid (1837–1888) was the second Sultan of Zanzibar. Barghash ruled Zanzibar from October 7, 1870 to March 26, 1888.

These coins are used as medicine till nowadays since they are made out of red copper, which supports the immune system and cures skin irritations. Also, there is a local belief that wearing a coin like this protects you from the evil spirit. Minted in Brussels from 1883 till 1891, all with date AH1299.

Obverse

Depicts a written incorrectly name of the Sultan (Sultan Said ibn Barghash ibn Sultan) accompanied by the expression "May Allah save him" in Arabic surrounded by the 14 decorated repeated incuse figures.
