The coat arms of Honduras were adopted in 1825 and show a round shield, surrounded by the motto "Republic of Honduras free sovereign and independent" and by two cornucopiae, a crest with a quiver of arrows and placed on a landscape.

The shield itself shows the triangle, based on the seal of the Central American Federation of the early 19th century, with two towers, a rainbow and sun. Between the towers a volcano is placed. The towers symbolise the defense readiness and the independence of the country. The triangle symbolizes equality and freedom.

Lempira was a war chieftain of the Lencas of western Honduras in Central America during the 1530s, when he led resistance to Francisco de Montejo's attempts to conquer and incorporate the region into the province of Honduras. Mentioned as Lempira in documents written during the Spanish conquest, he is regarded by the people as a warrior hero.

In 1931, Honduras renamed its currency in honor of Lempira.
