Description

Commemorative coins have been an Olympic tradition since the ancient Games, formally organized as collectors’ items starting with the Helsinki 1952 Games. The Rio 2016 Games marked the first time Brazil issued a commemorative coin collection for the Olympics.

To celebrate the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Brazilian Central Bank created 36 commemorative coins. This collection includes sixteen R$1 coins for regular circulation, along with four gold and sixteen silver coins.

Boxing is a combat sport where two competitors wearing gloves throw punches at each other in a ring for a set time. The objective is to score points by landing the most effective blows while minimizing damage from the opponent.

The earliest depiction of boxing dates back to a Sumerian relief from the 3rd millennium BCE in Iraq. Evidence of glove use appears in Minoan Crete around 1650–1400 BCE. Boxing was a popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome but declined after the Western Roman Empire fell. It reemerged in London in the late 17th century.

Boxing has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1904, except in 1912 when it was banned in Sweden. Initially a male-only event, women's boxing was introduced in 2012. Since the 2016 Olympics, male boxers no longer wear protective headgear due to increased concussion risk, while female boxers continue to wear it due to insufficient data on its effects.
