Description

In December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). The year is a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development.

In the context of the IYPH, plant health is defined as "the discipline that uses a range of measures to control and prevent pests, weeds and disease-causing organisms from spreading into new areas, especially through human interaction such as international trade".

Obverse

Depicts the official logo of the IYPH 2020 that symbolises leaves surrounded by the inscription. The leaves represent healthy plants as the source of the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat and all life on Earth.

Royal Belgian Mint Director Ingrid Van Herzele's mark (coat of arms of the municipality Herzele) is on the left. Logo of the Royal Dutch Mint (caduceus or Mercury's wand, a short staff entwined by two serpents) on the right. Date (with a flower as a first 0) and country code (BE) below.

The outer ring depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
