Description

South Sudan is a landlocked country in northeastern Africa that gained its independence from Sudan in 2011 that ended Africa's longest-running civil war.

Coins denominated 10, 20, and 50 Piasters were put into circulation on 9 July 2015 (South Sudanese Independence Day).

Obverse

Depicts the coat of arms of South Sudan surrounded by the country name above and the date below.

The coat of arms of the Republic of South Sudan consists an African fish eagle holding a crossed spear and spade, symbolizing the people’s resolve to protect the sovereignty of their republic and work hard to feed it. The eagle is depicted as looking towards its right shoulder with wings outstretched, and it holds in its claws a scroll bearing the name of the state. The eagle signifies strength, resilience, vision, and majesty.

The shoebilI (Balaeniceps rex) also known as whalehead, whale-headed stork, or shoe-billed stork, is a very large stork-like bird. It derives its name from its enormous shoe-shaped bill. The adult is mainly grey while the juveniles are browner. It lives in tropical east Africa in large swamps from South Sudan to Zambia.
