Description

On 6 October 2020, France issued a 2 euro commemorative coin carrying the theme Medical Research.

The year 2020 was marked by the global health crisis related to covid-19. This event has disrupted many lives to a greater or lesser extent. Nevertheless, this ordeal has often been a vector of cohesion and national unity.

As always in health issues, research is an essential key to the struggle. After having thanked the medical staff and all the people mobilized at the heart of this crisis by creating the medal “Merci”, Monnaie de Paris is continuing its action by creating a €2 commemorative collection to support research. For every €2 Medical Research coin purchased, Monnaie de Paris commits to donating €2 to Fondation de France.

Depicts a female portrait in a sphere and fragments of DNA. The monogram of the French Republic "RF" and the year of issue "2020" integrated into the composition.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a molecule composed of two polynucleotide chains that coil around each other to form a double helix carrying genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. DNA and ribonucleic acid (RNA) are nucleic acids. Alongside proteins, lipids and complex carbohydrates (polysaccharides), nucleic acids are one of the four major types of macromolecules that are essential for all known forms of life.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
