Description

In 2019, a new series of coins was introduced into circulation on April 26, with the same coin specifications and metallic compositions as the previous ones, but with the inscriptions of the coins now rendered in Latin-based Kazakh instead of Kazakh-based Cyrillic. The coins were issued as part of the efforts of the presidential decree issued by former President Nursultan Nazarbayev of its transition of switching from a Cyrillic-based alphabet to a Latin-based alphabet and emphasizing Kazakh culture and distance the country from Russian influence. In 2019, the National Bank of Kazakhstan announced the issuance of new 200-teńge coins, which were issued into circulation in 2020.

Obverse

National emblem surrounded by the inscription Republic of Kazakhstan, date below.

The emblem of Kazakhstan was adopted on June 4, 1992. The emblem is an image of shanyrak, the upper dome-like portion of a yurt, against a sky blue background which irradiates (in the form of sun rays) uyks (supports) set off by wings of mythical horses, inspired by Tulpar. The circle shape of the Emblem is a symbol of a life and eternity. The shanyrak symbolizes well-being of family, peace and calmness. The name of the country in Kazakh is in the lower part of the coat of arms.

A traditional yurt is a portable, round tent covered with skins or felt and used as a dwelling by nomads in the steppes of Central Asia. The structure comprises an angled assembly or latticework of pieces of wood or bamboo for walls, a door frame, ribs (poles, rafters), and a wheel (crown, compression ring) possibly steam-bent. The roof structure is often self-supporting, but large yurts may have interior posts supporting the crown.

Tulpar is a winged or swift horse in Turkic mythology (for example, Kazakh and Tatar mythology), corresponding to Pegasus. Tulpar is also in state emblems of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Bashkortostan.
