Description

During 2012-14, new coins were introduced in denominations of 50 cêntimos, 1, 5, 10 and 20 kwanzas. The currency derives its name from the Kwanza River (Cuanza, Coanza, Quanza).

Obverse

Depicts the logo of the National Bank of Angola that includes five-pointed star inside a circle formed by (left) a half maize and cotton leaves and (right) half gear-wheel. Date on a decorated field below.

The National Bank of Angola is the central bank of Angola. It is state-owned and the Government of Angola is the sole shareholder. The bank is based in Luanda, was created in 1926, but traces its ancestry back to 1865.
