Description

On 1 July 1997, the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the People's Republic of China took place, officially marking the end of Hong Kong's 156 years under British colonial governance. Hong Kong switched its country of administration overnight to become China's first Special Administrative Region.

The flag of Hong Kong features a white, stylised, five-petal Hong Kong orchid flower (Bauhinia blakeana), a flower discovered in Hong Kong.

Reverse

Depicts Wufu (meaning the five blessings, a concept that signifies a grouping of certain good fortunes and luck in Chinese culture) surrounding the Shòu (the Chinese word/character for "longevity"), denomination and date.

Five blessings, are the concepts that first appeared in the episode of Hong Fan (洪範), Classic of History (also named as Shujiang (書經) or Shangshu (尚書) ), in ancient China, more than 2,000 years ago. They refer to longevity ‘shou’ (壽), wealth ‘fu’ (富), health and composure ‘kangning’ (康寧), love of virtue ‘xin hao de’ (修好德), and the desire to have a peaceful death in old age ‘kao zhong ming’ (考終命), which being the concrete forms of good luck.
