Description

The tögrög or tugrik is the official currency of Mongolia. The word tögrög (төгрөг) refers to "circle", or a "circular object" (i.e. a coin).

The tögrög was introduced on December 9, 1925 at a value equal to one Soviet ruble, where one ruble or tögrög was equal to 18 grams (0.58 ozt) of silver. It replaced the Mongolian dollar and other currencies and became the sole legal currency on April 1, 1928.

Depicts the State emblem of Mongolian People's Republic (Soyombo, 1924-1940) and the inscription 'Pure Silver, 18 grams', date 'Year 15' below.

The Soyombo symbol is a special character in the Soyombo alphabet invented by Zanabazar in 1686. The name "Soyombo" is derived from Sanskrit svayambhu "self-created". The Soyombo symbol has appeared on the national Flag of Mongolia since its independence in 1911 (except between 1940-1945). It served as the Emblem of Mongolia from 1911 to 1940, and was included in the design again in 1992. Mongolian Armed Forces vehicles bear the symbol as a marking.

The Soyombo has ten elements in the columnar arrangement of abstract and geometric symbols and patterns. They are fire, sun (●), moon, two triangles (▼), two horizontal rectangles (▬), the Taijitu (yin and yang, ☯) and two vertical rectangles (▮).
