Description

This coin celebrates the opening of the Cairo Metro Line 2 from station of Hosny Mobarek (now called "Al-Shohadaa") to El Marg station. It is the first line in history to have a tunnel going under the Nile.

The Cairo Metro is the rapid transit system in Greater Cairo, Egypt. It was the first of the three full-fledged metro systems in Africa and the first in the Arab world to be constructed. It was opened in 1987 as Line 1 from Helwan to Ramsis square.

Obverse

Depicts the subway train coming out of a tunnel surrounded by the banner with the text 'Greater Cairo Metro Line 2 Opening', the logo of Cairo Metro in front of in a circle.

Depicts four patterned tiles: above-left state name 'Arab Republic of Egypt' and 'Ministry of Transportation', above-right value ٢٠ (20), below-left train entering subway tunnel and the inscription National Authority for Tunnels, below-right the currency (Qirsh, Piastres). Date in Arabic ١٤٠٩ (1409) above, Western year in Arabic numerals ١٩٨٩ (1989) below.
