Description

The celebration of the Science Day dates back to the royal era in 1944, when King Farouk announced that Egypt would celebrate the Science Day on August 17, every year. In the era of President Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1958, the date of Science Day was changed to December 21, the date of the opening of Cairo University in 1908.

Obverse

Depicts a satellite dish left of two towers on a stylized globe between (above) radiant sun (bottom) mirrored wreath of two branches with (2x6) 12 leaves and a cogwheel as a knot, quotation from Quran above.

A satellite dish is a dish-shaped type of parabolic antenna designed to receive or transmit information by radio waves to or from a communication satellite. The term most commonly means a dish that receives direct-broadcast satellite television from a direct broadcast satellite in geostationary orbit.

Reverse

Depicts on the left a seated writing Thoth (right), denomination in circle and dates (Gregorian and Hegira) in center and below, legend "Arab Republic of Egypt" above.

Thoth is an ancient Egyptian deity. In art, he was often depicted as a man with the head of an ibis or a baboon, animals sacred to him. His feminine counterpart was Seshat, and his wife was Ma'at. He was the god of wisdom, writing, hieroglyphs, science, magic, art, judgment, and the dead. His Greek equivalent is Hermes.
