Description

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921–1989) was a Soviet and Russian nuclear physicist, dissident, Nobel laureate, and activist for disarmament, peace and human rights.

He became renowned as the designer of the Soviet Union's RDS-37, a codename for Soviet development of thermonuclear weapons. Sakharov later became an advocate of civil liberties and civil reforms in the Soviet Union, for which he faced state persecution; these efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. The Sakharov Prize, which is awarded annually by the European Parliament for people and organizations dedicated to human rights and freedoms, is named in his honor.

Obverse

Depicts coat of arms of the Russian Federation, above the state name (Russian Federation) framed on both sides by doubled rhombuses, below indications of the precious metal and its fineness on the left and the fine metal content and the mint trademark (SPMD) on the right, at the bottom in the centre the Issuing authority (Bank of Russia), denomination and year of issue.

The two main elements of Russian state symbols (the two-headed eagle and the mounted figure slaying the dragon) predate Peter the Great. Today, however, the official description does not refer to the rider on the central shield as representing Saint George, mainly in order to maintain the secular character of the modern Russian state. The imperial crowns on each headstand for the unity and sovereignty of Russia, both as a whole and in its constituent republics and regions. The orb and sceptre grasped in the eagle's talons are traditional heraldic symbols of sovereign power and authority. They have been retained in modern Russian arms despite the fact that the Russian Federation is not a monarchy.
