Description

The wedding of Prince Albert, Prince of Monaco, and Charlene Wittstock took place on 1 and 2 July 2011 at the Prince's Palace of Monaco. The groom, Albert II, Prince of Monaco, is the Sovereign Prince of the Principality of Monaco. The bride, Charlene Wittstock, was a South African Olympic swimmer. A two-day public holiday for the celebrations was declared.

The civil ceremony was held in the Throne Room, conducted by Philippe Narmino, president of the Council of State, while the religious ceremony took place in the courtyard of the palace, and was presided over by Archbishop Bernard Barsi.

The coin's design is very similar to the coin issued in 2011 on the occasion of the wedding itself.

Obverse

Depicts the effigies of Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock in the centre, country name above, topic framed by the years "2011" and "2021" as well as the mint marks of the mint and the general engraver. The twelve stars of the European Union surround the design on the outer ring.

Charlene was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), the daughter of Michael and Lynette Wittstock; the family relocated to South Africa in 1989. She began her swimming career in 1996 (winning the South African Championship) and represented South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, with her team finishing fifth in the 4 × 100-metre medley relay. Charlene retired from professional swimming in 2007. On 10 December 2014, she gave birth to twins Princess Gabriella and Hereditary Prince Jacques. Princess Charlene's charity work primarily revolves around sport, AIDS and underprivileged children.

Reverse

A geographical map of Western Europe spans the outer ring and inner core on the right side of the coin. The inscription 2 EURO is superimposed over the map of Europe, with the numeral “2” located in an open field representing the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

12 stars are located on the right side of the outer ring, with six stars atop the map of Europe and six stars below it; six vertical stripes cut across the inner core of the coin, visually connecting the upper and lower star segments.

Luc Luycx, a designer at the Royal Belgian Mint, designed the Euro’s common reverse; his initials, LL, are seen on the right side of the design, just under the “O” in “EURO.”
